Dear Ms./Mr. [Last name],
When we heard how much a lawyer would charge to draft a hardship letter, we decided to write one on our own.
If not for a string of unfortunate events that have plagued us since 2010, you would not have been reading this letter requesting you to not take away our car.
In May of that year, my wife was laid off by her work clothing and uniform rental employer. She worked as a floor supervisor. She now works as a checkout clerk at the local mall. There is a history of mental illness in her family and she has recently been diagnosed as suffering from borderline personality disorder. According to the psychiatrist, it is the layoff that may have undermined her mental well-being.
As for me, I am a salesman and travel quite extensively throughout the Midwest. I average 18 days on the road a month. Fortunately, my wife's sister is also our neighbor. In the past few years, I have met and spoken with many others who have met a similar fate as my wife. In many ways, my wife and I consider ourselves blessed that I still have a job.
Unfortunately, my wife's layoff, my recent prostate surgery, our medical and household expenses, and a salary freeze at our company have all forced us to be delinquent in making our car loan payments.
If you take away our car, I will most certainly lose my job.
We are writing this letter in support of our application for a forbearance plan and to ask for your understanding. We find ourselves unable to make the $[Amount] payments and can afford no more than $[Amount].
Please find attached information about our finances in support of this letter.
Do let us know if you have any questions or need more information to process our application.
We fully intend to repay the car loan. All we ask of you is a little more time.
Please help.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
